Eating Mindfully

How many of the things you do daily happen on auto-pilot? Is feeding yourself one of them?

There are many schools of thought, ranging from Gestalt therapy to Zen Buddhism, that view the way you relate to and interact with food to the way you relate to your life and the world. Do you really taste, savor and enjoy the experience of eating? Do you use food to numb out? Do you rush through your meals while walking, driving or working in front of your desk? Mindful Eating is a skill that can not only be incredibly supportive for those struggling with disordered eating, but for anyone looking to bring more awareness and intention to their relationship with food, as well as feel more connected to a high vitality life.

What is it? Mindful Eating starts with paying *attention*; to When you feel like eating, Why (are you board? Sad? Nervous?), What you are eating and How it makes you feel, before, during and after your eat. Once we tune into the experience we are having with the food, in the moment, this awareness may begin to generalize to a connection to wear the food comes from, how it was grown or processed, how it was prepared and by whom.

Why bother with this all? Through developing a practice of Mindful Eating, you may find that over time you have more control over when and how much you eat, and enjoy the experience a lot more. You may naturally begin to shift your food preferences towards more nutritious choices, and really savor the indulgences. You create an opportunity to separate your emotions from food, if this has been a struggle for you, and can develop meaningful rituals around meals. Lastly, you'll gain awareness around how foods fuel and effect your body, mind and energy levels, potentially choosing options more often that you know make you feel great.
